The African Grey Parrot (Psittacus erithacus) is one of the most intelligent parrot species, known for its exceptional talking ability and cognitive skills. Native to Central and West Africa, this highly social and sensitive companion bird requires dedicated care and mental stimulation.

African Grey Parrot Appearance

African Greys have ash-gray feathers, a striking red tail, and a white mask around their eyes. They grow to about 12–14 inches (30–36 cm) in length and weigh between 400–600 grams. There are two main subspecies:

  • Congo African Grey (CAG): Larger, with a light gray body and bright red tail.
  • Timneh African Grey (TAG): Smaller, with a darker gray body and maroon tail.

With proper care, an African Grey Parrot can live 40–60 years, making them a long-term commitment for any bird owner.

African Grey Parrot Diet

A nutrient-rich diet is essential for an African Grey’s health. Their diet should include:

  • High-quality pellets (primary food source)
  • Fresh fruits (bananas, apples, berries, pomegranates)
  • Vegetables (carrots, broccoli, spinach, bell peppers)
  • Nuts and seeds (almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds in moderation)
  • Calcium supplements (cuttlefish bone, mineral blocks)

Avoid chocolate, avocado, caffeine, alcohol, and high-sodium foods, as these can be toxic.

African Grey Parrot Talking & Intelligence

Considered the most intelligent talking bird, African Greys have the ability to learn hundreds of words, mimic voices, and even understand context. They require daily mental stimulation through:

  • Training sessions
  • Puzzle toys & foraging activities
  • Regular social interaction

African Grey Parrot Care & Cage Setup

  • Cage size: Minimum 36x24x48 inches with horizontal bars for climbing.
  • Toys & Enrichment: Rotate chewable toys, ropes, and puzzle feeders to prevent boredom.
  • Daily Interaction: Requires at least 2–3 hours outside the cage for bonding and exercise.
  • Bathing: Provide a shallow water dish or misting spray for feather health.

African Grey Parrot Behavior & Personality

African Greys are highly sensitive, intelligent, and social birds. They form strong bonds with their owners and can develop separation anxiety if left alone for extended periods. Common behaviors include:

  • Mimicking speech & sounds
  • Problem-solving & puzzle-solving
  • Displaying affection through body language
  • Being cautious or shy around strangers

They may develop feather plucking or stress-related behaviors if their emotional and mental needs aren’t met.
